Yesterday, I took the bins out and found the worst thing that you can find after you take them out- bin juice. That foul-smelling liquid that is left behind from rotting fruit and vegetables and whatever else was in there. Unfortunately, scrubbing just wasn’t enough- despite trying. Thus started the search on ChatGPT (my current life coach on all things that I struggle with) on how to fix this problem. Honestly, I don’t know what I did before ChatGPT when trying to solve problems.
First, it said to create this paste from bicarb and water and wipe it on top and leave for 30 minutes. I’ll be honest I was sceptical. Although my Mum swears by toothpaste for stain removal because of the bicarb. So, after I made the paste, I smeared it over the stain and prayed with bated breath.
However, me being me, I decided to find another solution whilst that was soaking. I decided that vinegar was my next best shot. Not something I really like so don’t tend to have in my cupboard. I got dressed- which at the moment is such a palaver. Also, I stupidly did not check the weather before choosing my outfit- thinking it’s May, it should be cold, I’ll just wear a jumper. Nope- what a decision. It was 20 degrees outside, definitely not jumper weather.
By the time I got to the shop to buy vinegar, I was so sweaty and I only live a five-minute walk away. I really welcomed walking down the refrigerated aisles despite the fact that vinegar is not refrigerated.
Me being a novice on the cleaning front- I hate cleaning! Found the vinegar and nearly bought a fancy vinegar which is apparently fantastic on salad dressings. A sweet old lady told me exactly how to make it – a bit of olive oil mixed with it and you have the perfect vinaigrette. She also found the cheap vinegar meant for cleaning.
I also purchased some sparkling water because it gives the illusion of drinking a beer, due to the pssshh sound when opening cans … without actually drinking alone. I’m not saying I don’t drink- I just don’t when I have no-one to drink with. I felt like I deserved a small reward after solving the bin juice disaster.
I got home, wiped away the bicarb paste, poured on the vinegar and water solution and hoped for the best. I was really surprised that there wasn’t a stronger smell to the vinegar, if I’m honest.
After checking the stain this morning, I seem to have done a pretty good job. Against all odds, the bin juice disaster appears to be over.
